Fourth Sunday Pottery Class is a one time class that introduces students to the potter's wheel.

During the 3 hour class, the students will focus on making pieces and having fun. Our staff will fire and glaze your pieces once the pieces are fired. We will have many glazes to choose from at the end of class. The pieces will be ready to pick up about 4 weeks after the class, we will email you when the pieces are ready to pick up.

Preregistration required for this class. No refunds. If you can not make it to the class, we can transfer your registration to a different month with 7 days advance notice.

This year’s Spring Sale will be held in the Fellowship Hall at South-Broadland Presbyterian Church (79th & Holmes). Space is available for up to 45 artists.

This is a non-juried sale. All applicants who properly complete the application will be accepted.

The sale will use a central checkout system, so artists are not required to stay at their tables for the full event. However, each artist will be asked to help staff the sale by working one 4-hour shift. A sign-up for shift times and assigned tasks will be sent out after the application closes.

Each artist will be allotted a 6' x 3' space and must provide their own table and tablecloth, or similarly sized display shelves.

Inventory Requirement
All artists are required to submit an Excel inventory file. Office hours will be available for those who need assistance. The inventory spreadsheet template and instructions will be sent out after the application closes. Artists must use the provided files and may not modify the artist code or numbering system. To keep the spreadsheet manageable, artists are asked to cap their inventory at 240 items. (For reference, top sellers typically sell an average of 150 items per sale.)

Application Materials & Payment
Before applying, please have two or three high-quality photos and a Word document containing your artist statement and/or personal bio ready. Images should be at least 300 DPI and large enough for online advertising and social media. Be sure to complete all required application fields before submitting payment.

Payment is due at the time of registration. Applications left unpaid for more than 24 hours will be automatically deleted.

Sales & Payout
Artists keep 80% of sales, and the KC Clay Guild retains 20% to cover overhead and expenses. Artists will be paid by check, PayPal, or Zelle.

Maiolica, Majolica: an introducation

What is it, how it's done, and how it's pronounced.

This 6-week course is designed for potters with intermediate skills who would like to explore Majolica decoration. In this course, Artist in Residence Huey Lee will cover the process from start to finish, including hand-building and wheel throwing forms that will lend themselves well to this decorative technique. The main focus, though, will be on the glazing technique of Majolica.

Students in this class are expected to be self-motivated and have a good foundation of wheel throwing, handbuilding, and glazing skills.

The class fee covers everything you need, including 25 lbs of clay, Huey's white glaze that serves as the base for all majolica, and Amaco velvet underglaze. An additional materials fee of $20 is included in the price for a set of brushes you'll get to keep after the class.

The course will meet for 6 weeks on Sunday mornings from 10 am - 1 pm, starting April 12th.

Huey will begin by teaching the basics of majolica and helping the class explore how majolica can be used in their own body of work. The class will then progress to making and glazing their own work, and will culminate on May 17th with a class critique and tea party!

Due to the nature of this class, there will not be any makeup days.

Cancelations must be requested with no less than 7 days notice to receive a refund.

Handbuilding Class

This casual one and a half hour class offers students the opportunity to make and glaze a finished piece of ceramic art. The class is open to kids ages 6-12 years old.

The kids will learn to build a trinket box with pinch pots or slabs. They'll also learn how to add sculptural elements to the box. We have tools to create texture and they even get to glaze their pieces the same night.

Our staff will fire all the work following the class; finished pieces will be ready to pick up after a few weeks. Once fired, we will contact you via email for pick-up.

We ask parents and guardians to check in with the instructor when dropping off and picking up their children from this class.

We require 7 business days notice for a cancellation with full refund.

Soda Firing Workshop with

Participants will have an in-depth and hands-on opportunity to learn how to fire the KC Clay Guild Soda Kiln using a custom clay body.

Alex graduated with a BFA in Ceramics from Utah State University in 2005. After graduating, he taught ceramics classes and managed the ceramics department at a small school in the Berkshires. In 2008, Watson moved to Colorado, where he lived and worked until 2013. He was an artist in residence at the Carbondale Clay Center and Studio for Artists Works. In 2010, he was a visiting artist at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in China. Upon returning from China, Watson became a full time studio potter. He is now in Kansas City, MO and is a founding member of the Kansas City Urban Potters. Students in the workshop will gain an understanding of firing the KC Clay Guild Soda Kiln with great results!

May 30th, last day to drop off work for bisque firing:

This is the deadline for making pieces from the custom clays and dropping off your finished work on the greenware shelf at KC Clay Guild. Leave a note with your pieces that states they are for the 'soda firing workshop'.

Custom clays available as soon as you register and pay. Pick up from the front desk, clay will be labeled with your name.

Students receive 25 pounds of clay before the class so they can have bisqued pieces ready to go. Alex suggested using wood fire B-Mix or soda clay for best results.

Students will have free access to the studio to make pieces, mark yourself as a 'student'. Pieces with smooth surfaces, broad planes, and clean shapes will take on the most dynamic surfaces. Pieces with texture also look great and will have really nice contrast.

Saturday, June 6th, 2pm to ~7pm:

-Briefing on loading and firing the kiln

-Glaze interior of pots

-Load kiln using wading, seashells

-Candle kiln overnight

Sunday, June 7th, 6am-9pm:

-Hands-on firing of kiln

-Prepare soda mixture

Wednesday, June 10th, 5:30pm-7:30pm

-Unload kiln

-Kiln clean up

Fee: $250 for members, $300 for non-members

12 participant limit

Studio time to make pots included

25 pounds of clay included

Each participant allotted 24”x12”x8” kiln space - example: 4 mugs, 2 dinner plates, and a small vase

Cancellation with refund is not available for this workshop.

A few notes:

-Wear closed-toe shoes during the workshop

-Bring a half mask respirator with P100 cartridges if you have one

-The more time you spend at the kiln during the firing, the more you will learn. If you hope to learn how to fire this kiln, plan on being at KCCG all day on Sunday.
