SARA SELLITTO TRAVISE
Sara Sellitto Travise was born in Binghamton, NY and she spent much of her time as a child exploring the landscape of East Lake, PA. It was here that her first explorations of landscape and decomposition occurred. Her family moved to the Midwest later in her childhood, giving her yet another landscape to explore with new and different ecosystems.
She received her BS in Graphic Design from Bradley University in Peoria, IL and her MFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA.
Instilled with the ‘wander gene’ since childhood, Sara traveled extensively from 2011 to 2013, exploring landscapes from the east coast of the United States to the west coast. She took her work abroad in 2012 to Italy where she worked on a project of exploring the physical landscape and methods of searching for lost family members. She returned to the United States and embarked on an intensive 3-week journey from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest recording and documenting her travels across the landscape.
In 2013 she relocated from San Francisco, CA to Kansas City, MO. Her most recent travel exhibition was to Australia researching the Aboriginal way of life in connection to the land and its resources.
“I am inspired by the natural process of decomposition within the elements of the forest floor. To observe these ecosystems is to see into small universes of life. I see these elements as an extension of ourselves and our own life cycle.”
“My methods of creation are organic in form, each piece being unique. I explore and document the different stages of the decomposition process, revealing an elegant, beautiful destruction.”
“I continue to travel and record my observations of the landscapes I visit. Each new landscape brings new inspiration, color pallets, and design ideas.”
