Join the KC Clay Guild for our First Annual Clay Olympics!
Challenge yourself and others with a series of skill challenges for both wheel throwers and hand builders. Registration for this event is $20 for members and $30 for non-members and includes participation in 3 events. First place in each event receives a $25 KCCG gift card. Each participant receives an event sticker. Only clay and tools provided by KCCG are to be used during the event. The event will run from 9am-12pm. Please arrive between 8:45 and 9am and plan to be present until noon. Late arrivals will be allowed to participate only at the discretion of event organizers.
The events you may choose to participate in are:
Tallest Thrown Cylinder: You will have 5 minutes and 4lbs of clay to throw the tallest cylinder that you can. It must be atleast 4 inches wide. It will be measured with a ruler by the room volunteer.
Blindfolded Throwing: You will be blindfolded and have 5 minutes and 2lbs of clay to throw the tallest cylinder that you can. It will be measured with a ruler by the room volunteer.
One Handed Throwing: You will have 5 minutes and 2lbs of clay to throw the most even cylinder that you can with only one hand. It will be judged on the evenness of the walls and how centered it is by one of our adult judges.
Widest Plate: You will have 5 minutes and 3lbs of clay to throw the widest plate. It must be thick enough to be wired off the wheel without the wire cutting through the bottom. It also must have a rim that comes up off the wheel head (no pancakes). The width will be measured with a ruler by the room volunteer.
Teapot Challenge: You will have 10 minutes and 5lbs of clay to throw all of the components of a teapot and attach them. It must have a body, spout, lid and handle. We are embracing the messiness of attaching all components while still wet. Given the subjective nature of this challenge it will be judged by a child based solely on personal preference. It will be silly and it will be fun.
Oven Mitt Pinch Pot: You will have 5 minutes and 2lbs of clay to make a pinch pot while wearing oven mitts. It will be judged based on the volume of the pinch pot in cubic inches (HxWxD) measured by the room volunteer.
Tallest Coil Pot: You will have 10 minutes and 4lbs of clay to make the tallest coil pot. Coils must be rolled by hand. The pot much be at least 3 inches wide. It will be measured with a ruler by the room volunteer.
Longest Coil: You will have 5 minutes and 1/4 pound of clay to roll the longest continuous coil. If the coil breaks, the longest peice will be measured. It will be measured by the room volunteer.
Once you've registered, you'll receive a confirmation email with a link to a Sign-Up Genius we've created for the event. Please click the link and sign up for your 3 events. Anyone who does not sign up within 24 hours of registration will have their registeration canceled and their fee refunded.
Due to our current capacity limitations, we will not be allowing spectators. If you'd like to attend, but not participate, you are welcome to be a volunteer.
